Windows 11 Update Fails and Printer Drivers/Settings Are Missing

I'm using Windows 11 and have been dealing with three related problems for several days. First, the 2026-09 Security Update (KB5129195, build 26200.9457) downloads and requests a restart, but after reboot it fails with error 0x80070002. Manually downloading and installing the update produces the same result.

Second, I recently installed a Ricoh IM C3510 photocopier on my company's LAN. It appears under Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & scanners, and I can print to it, but Windows only gives me a three-dot menu with Remove. I can't open printer properties or preferences, so every print job requires me to manually select options such as black-and-white printing and the correct paper size.

Finally, my Epson LQ-300+II dot-matrix printer, which connects by USB, disappeared from working order. Windows still lists it, but it shows an Error status and cannot be used or reinstalled. Installing the driver reports that Windows cannot find the core driver package required by the printer driver package. The Epson printer previously worked on this computer, and I'm not sure when it stopped working. What should I check first for the update and both printer problems?

For the Epson, remove the old printer and its stale driver package before trying again. Open Print Management or the classic Print Server Properties dialog, go to the Drivers tab, and remove the Epson driver and driver package if Windows allows it. Disconnect the USB cable, restart the Print Spooler service or reboot, then install the correct 64-bit Windows driver before reconnecting the printer. If the vendor installer fails, extract the driver and add it manually with the .inf file.

The ‘core driver package’ message often means that an incomplete or incompatible package is already registered, or that the installer is looking for files that were removed. Also try a different USB port and avoid connecting through an unpowered hub. If the printer is shared from another computer, install the driver locally rather than relying on the remote machine’s package.

For the Ricoh, this sounds more like the wrong driver or a managed print-server installation than a network connectivity problem. Being able to ping and print only proves that the device is reachable; it doesn’t guarantee that the full Ricoh driver is installed or that your account is allowed to change its defaults.

Remove the current printer and install it using the Ricoh PCL6 or PostScript driver that matches your Windows 11 architecture. If your company uses a print server, get the printer connection and driver from whoever manages it rather than adding it through the basic Windows printer setup. After installing the full driver, open it through Control Panel > Devices and Printers > right-click the printer > Printing preferences or Printer properties. Some workplaces also lock these settings through Group Policy or the print server, so an administrator may need to change the defaults.

It is connected over the company LAN, and I can print successfully. I’ll check whether it was added with a generic Windows driver and ask the administrator whether the print server is restricting the preferences.

For update error 0x80070002, start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, then stop the Windows Update and BITS services and rename the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders before starting those services again. Reboot and check for the update once more. Make sure the system drive has free space and that the Windows date, time, and region are correct.

If it still fails, run these from an elevated Command Prompt: `DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth` followed by `sfc /scannow`. Then try the update again. If the update remains stuck, an in-place repair install using the latest Windows 11 installation media usually preserves files and applications while rebuilding damaged update components. Since this is a company computer, confirm with IT first, especially if updates or printer permissions are managed centrally.
