Windows apps won’t open after downloading Sims 4 custom content

I have a four-year-old Windows PC that was working normally until I downloaded a large amount of Sims 4 custom content from various sources. Since then, apps such as Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Photos won't open. I deleted the downloaded files, but the problem remains. Some programs still launch if I find them through search, while apps pinned to the taskbar appear to open but never show on screen. What troubleshooting steps should I try before considering a full Windows reinstall?

Windows system components may have become corrupted, or the downloads may have included malware. First back up important files, then run System File Checker and DISM from an administrator Command Prompt or Windows Terminal—not the regular Run box. Use `sfc /scannow`, followed by `DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth`, and restart afterward. You could also try System Restore if an earlier restore point exists.

If the repair commands and malware scan don’t solve it, a clean Windows installation is probably the most reliable fix. Back up documents, photos, and game saves first, then create Windows installation media on a USB drive using another computer. If that sounds intimidating, a reputable repair shop can reinstall Windows while keeping your existing hardware.

Since the trouble started after downloading files from questionable sources, run a thorough malware scan. Ideally use a bootable antivirus USB created on a different, trusted computer so the scan runs outside the affected Windows installation. Avoid launching unknown files until the system has been checked.

A reinstall doesn’t mean replacing the whole PC. Your existing Alienware system should still be usable; reinstalling Windows simply replaces the damaged operating system. Make sure you have backups and any needed product keys or driver information before starting.
