I haven't used my laptop in a while, and lately Windows Explorer occasionally stops responding while I'm browsing the web or working in Excel. When it happens, I can't click the taskbar or switch between or close applications. What steps should I try to diagnose and fix this?

Start by checking Event Viewer for errors around the time the freeze happens. Press Win+X, choose Event Viewer, then open Windows Logs > Application and look for recent errors involving Explorer.exe or another application. The details may point to a damaged system component, driver, storage problem, or third-party extension.
When it freezes, try restarting Explorer rather than rebooting the whole laptop: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find Windows Explorer in Task Manager, right-click it, and select Restart. If the issue keeps returning, run the System File Checker and DISM repair commands from an administrator Command Prompt, then check whether the problem occurs in a clean boot with third-party startup items disabled.
It could be a failing drive, but Explorer can also hang because of a broken shell extension, thumbnail or file-preview handler, outdated driver, or a very large folder. Check the drive’s health and install pending Windows and driver updates. You can also temporarily disable third-party Explorer extensions and preview panes to see whether the freezing stops.
Having plenty of free space doesn’t rule out a drive-health problem, although Explorer extensions and preview generation are also common causes.
