I'm still building my fundamentals, but I'm considering spending the next two months creating a scalable RAG-based AI pipeline with Grafana, Prometheus, GitOps, and related deployment tooling. Given that I have about a year of React experience and nearly a year working on full-stack microservices, but very little hands-on DevOps experience, would a project like this make me competitive for DevOps, platform, or backend roles? If not, what should I focus on next?

The project itself can absolutely help, but it won’t make you hireable just because it uses impressive tools. Employers will want to see that you understand the design, can explain the trade-offs, and can prove the system works. Include tests, deployment documentation, monitoring dashboards, failure scenarios, and a clear explanation of what you built and why.
Since you haven’t worked with much DevOps yet, start with the fundamentals: Linux, networking, containers, CI/CD, cloud basics, and troubleshooting. Then add Kubernetes and GitOps once you understand the underlying deployment process. Build in stages so you can explain each layer and demonstrate what happens when services fail, traffic increases, or a deployment needs to be reversed.
The tool list is less important than your reasoning. Be ready to explain why you chose GitOps instead of deploying directly from CI, what happens if a rollout fails halfway through, how you would roll back safely, and how you’d investigate a pod stuck in CrashLoopBackOff. Those practical questions matter much more than simply mentioning Kubernetes, Prometheus, or Grafana.
A personal project is useful evidence of initiative, especially with your React and microservices background, but treat it as a portfolio project rather than a substitute for professional experience. Keep the scope realistic and finish a smaller system well instead of trying to build every piece of cloud-native infrastructure at once. A working, documented application with observability is stronger than a huge unfinished stack.
