I'm currently considering two SSDs: the Samsung 990 Pro and the WD Black SN850X, both priced the same. I've heard mixed opinions about the Samsung 990 Pro, especially regarding some past health issues, but I was told that these problems were fixed long ago and I wouldn't need to worry about firmware updates if I buy one now. Is that really the case? Which one should I go for?

They are quite similar in performance. Just check out a comparison chart to help you decide. If you don’t have a strong preference, either one would work just fine for most use cases!
Honestly, both drives are high-end Gen 4 options from reputable brands, so you can't really go wrong with either. Just pick whichever one you prefer or have a better deal on.
Does the Samsung 990 Pro still have that health issue, or is it all sorted now? Would I need to update the firmware if I buy it new in 2025?
You haven’t mentioned your specific needs or what you do with the drives. Both are great options but might be overkill for casual use. If you’re not doing heavy workloads, you might save some money going for a more affordable SSD!
I’m mainly using it for work and gaming. Since they’re both the same price, does that change any recommendations?
Why not consider a PNY instead? It’s usually 30% cheaper and still a solid choice!
I'd recommend getting the Samsung. Almost every review ranks it among the top performers. Plus, their Magician software makes managing the drive really simple and effective.
I noticed that the WD one doesn't have a cache – is that correct?
