Best Ways to Organize and Sort a Huge Inbox of 100,000+ Emails

I'm tasked with sorting through an enormous inbox of over 100,000 emails belonging to a colleague who recently passed away. He kept everything in his inbox with only a few emails organized into folders, and used this business email for personal matters too. It's critical that I separate the private emails to hand over to his family while organizing the business emails for colleagues without losing the existing structure. I've thought about automating the sorting process by filtering emails based on sender domains, but the sheer volume makes it challenging. I need help figuring out the best approach to with filters, scripts, or tools to handle this effectively and quickly without risking any important emails. Any suggestions?

I recommend using eDiscovery in Purview to manage this. It allows you to create complex search queries to extract specific types of emails, which you can then export into separate PST files. It's a lot less risky than moving items directly within the mailbox! Check out Microsoft's docs on how to formulate these queries.

I did a similar task using eDiscovery, and honestly, it made the process really straightforward. Got everything sorted out quickly without any hassle!
