Getting Roundcube setup is a fairly painless process. The most difficult part is finding a version that works. Unless you have an existing setup, go with the complete package to avoid any issues with missing dependencies. I was getting several 500 errors when trying to get this set up for the first time. I finally had some luck with a complete package. I will put the URL below. Follow these steps to get Roundcube mail client set up on your web server.
Rather than deal with FTP, download everything through the command line. The following lines will download and unzip the complete Roundcube mail instance. You should check to make sure there isn’t a newer version of this package released since if you are looking at this post in the future!
cd /var/www/html wget https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/roundcubemail/roundcubemail/1.1.3/roundcubemail-1.1.3-complete.tar.gz tar xfz roundcubemail-1.1.3-complete.tar.gz mv roundcubemail-1.1.3 roundcubemail
You now have a folder inside the common website documents folder that Apache uses. All you need to do now is set up a virtual host in apache that points to the Roundcube directory and you will be able to begin the install process.
Open “/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf”. This is the default location of Apaches conf file. If you have followed the standard install for this service, the file will be here. Scroll down to where all of the virtual host tags are found and add the following. Change the ServerName value to whatever is relevant for the domain you own. If you have put the documents for Roundcube into a different directory, then you will also need to modify this accordingly.
<VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mail.website.com DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/roundcubemail" <Directory "/var/www/html/roundcubemail"> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost>
Refresh apache using “service httpd reload” and you should be able to visit the mail subdomain through your web browser. If everything was done correctly, you will be presented with the setup wizard for Roundcube webmail client. Follow the steps to get the server setup and running.
