I have an older PC with an AMD Ryzen 3 3100, and I've heard that my motherboard might not be compatible with newer CPUs. I'm looking at an AMD Ryzen 7 1800x that someone is selling and I'm wondering if it's a good upgrade option for me. Any help would be appreciated!

Just get the Ryzen 5 3600; it's a solid choice for an upgrade. How does the installation sound to you?

As others have mentioned, update the BIOS on your ASRock A320M/ac motherboard and then pop in a 5xxx series CPU. It's going to be a substantial improvement over going back to a Zen 1 chip.

The 1800X isn't really a gaming upgrade from the 3100, but it could help with multi-core tasks. I'd go for a 5600 or 5800 series CPU, but be ready to update your motherboard's BIOS first. Do you know what motherboard you have? That'll help with compatibility.

You can actually upgrade to any CPU in the 5000 series since you have an AM4 socket, even the 5800X3D if you're feeling adventurous. I wouldn't suggest going with a 3000 series CPU again since the 5000 series has a lot of improvements. If budget is a concern, the Ryzen 5500 is under $100 and provides a massive performance increase.

I recommend the Ryzen 5600 or 5600X for a great performance boost! They're affordable and definitely a step up from your current CPU. Just make sure to update your BIOS to the latest version before making the switch.
