I'm on the hunt for a new desktop computer because my current 21-inch iMac from 2024 just isn't cutting it speed-wise. It's surprising since my older iMac from 2020 was way faster, largely because I could upgrade the RAM to 40 GB myself. Now, I'm baffled that my 2020 machine outperforms my 2026 one.
I checked the Apple website and it looks like the highest RAM available for the iMac is only 24 GB unless I go for the Mac Pro, which is too much. I'm wondering if there are any other viable options, like a Mac mini or something? Ideally, I want a powerful setup for around $2500. Any suggestions?

Anything equipped with an M-series CPU is a good bet. The RAM might be less than what you're used to, but the performance is still impressive. Just remember, self-upgrades are almost impossible since everything is soldered in these models.
If you're looking for something budget-friendly, the M4 Mac mini is right around $500, which is quite reasonable for its capabilities!
A Mac mini or studio is a solid choice. Just keep in mind to pair it with a monitor that fits your work style—don't overlook that part!
You should definitely check out the Mac mini and Mac Studio. They offer some great specs without going overboard in price. Plus, you'll find flexibility when it comes to upgrading your monitor separately.

What monitors do you guys recommend that would pair well with them?
