I'm trying to figure out whether I should purchase the MSI RTX 3050 low profile or the Yeston low profile version. They are both priced the same. My setup is a Dell Precision Tower 3420, so I want to know which option would work better for my system.

The MSI 3050, being a dual slot card, won’t work properly in your setup. The PCIe slot on your Dell is only wired for 4 lanes, limiting the performance of any GPU you install. The single slot Yeston would be the safer option for compatibility in your prebuilt setup.
You should definitely look into the form factor of your case. The MSI 3050 might not even fit since it’s a dual slot card. Your tower can only accommodate a single slot GPU, and even if you manage to squeeze one in, airflow will be pretty poor. Considering your 290W PSU, it's better to keep things simple and go for the Yeston card instead.
But can I connect the MSI 3050 to a black PCIe slot instead of the blue one?

That's true, but the Yeston only has one fan, so I worry about the noise level during use.
