What Can I Do with My Windows 8.1 Surface Tablets?

I recently picked up a couple of Surface tablets on Facebook Marketplace that are running Windows 8.1. I know this version is no longer supported, and I'm wondering what my options are for downloading apps. My main goal is to use these tablets as basic displays for a D&D campaign, but their specs aren't quite strong enough to support Windows 10 or 11. Any advice?

If you want to keep using those tablets, one option is to look into upgrading the hardware. However, keep in mind that these devices are often glued together, making upgrades tricky. You might just end up with a fancy ebook reader if you don't.

That sounds complicated! Is there any way to upgrade the internals, or are we stuck with what’s there?

Have you considered switching to Linux? If your apps can run on it, flashing Ubuntu might be a good way to go. If not, then upgrading to a newer OS might be your only option.

I mainly need Discord and a browser for the questportal site. I’m not really familiar with Linux, though.
