I'm putting together my first PC and tend to multitask heavily, with lots of browser tabs, gaming, and Discord calls. My budget is already tight, so I'm considering buying one 16GB DDR5 stick now and adding a matching stick later when I can afford it. However, I've heard that buying a second module months later can sometimes cause compatibility issues. Would it be better to buy a 2x8GB kit now for dual-channel performance, even though I may never upgrade, or choose 1x16GB for easier future expansion? I'm currently planning to use a Ryzen 5 9600X and a motherboard with DDR5 support.

Starting with 1x16GB can make sense if buying 2x8GB would prevent you from getting the rest of the PC built. It leaves room to add another 16GB later, but there’s no guarantee that a separately purchased module will work perfectly with the first one, even if the model number is the same. If you go this route, buy the exact same kit or module if possible, and enable dual-channel operation after installing the second stick.
If you can afford a 2x8GB kit, that’s generally the better choice for performance right now. Two sticks run in dual-channel mode, while one 16GB stick runs in single-channel mode and can reduce CPU and gaming performance by roughly 5–15%, depending on the game and workload. A matched kit also avoids the uncertainty of adding a second module later.
A four-slot motherboard gives you more upgrade options, since you could add another 2x8GB kit later. That said, filling all four slots can be less reliable at high DDR5 speeds and may require lowering the memory speed or adjusting settings. It’s usually best to use a matched 2x16GB kit if you eventually want 32GB, rather than mixing separate kits.
