Best Upgrade Options for My i7-4790K Setup?

I've got an older setup with an i7-4790K CPU, a GTX 970 graphics card, and 16GB of RAM. I play games like Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and Valorant, but I'm dealing with some stuttering and inconsistent FPS. I'm considering upgrading my graphics card, but I'm unsure about the best option for achieving stable frame rates at a reasonable price. What would you recommend?

The GTX 970 is getting pretty old too. If you're looking for a budget-friendly GPU upgrade, you could sell your 970 and get something like a GTX 1080 or even a 1080 Ti. That should give you a noticeable performance bump without completely breaking the bank.

That's a great shout! I had a similar setup and switching to a 1080 was a game-changer for me.

Honestly, your CPU is really starting to show its age, especially for those CPU-intensive games. You'll want to upgrade that first before even thinking about a new GPU. I'd suggest looking into an i5 12400 or a Ryzen 5 5600—they're pretty solid deals right now. Then upgrade your GPU later on.

Yeah, I totally agree! I initially held back on upgrading my CPU and regretted it because it was bottlenecking my performance in games.

Your whole setup is due for an upgrade. I went from an i7-3770K to a budget i3, and the difference was crazy! If you're serious about gaming, consider getting a whole new bundle with a motherboard, CPU, and RAM, because your current CPU is really holding back performance in modern games.

Absolutely! I had a similar experience going with a new CPU and it felt like a breath of fresh air for my gaming experience.
