Hey everyone! Sometimes my ThinkPad 420 gets really hot and just shuts off. I'm running Ubuntu on it and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Do you have any suggestions on what might be causing it? Also, is there any way to measure the CPU temperature? Would really appreciate any help!

I run Ubuntu on a T420 without any issues. Have you tried cleaning the fan and replacing the thermal paste? That might help cool things down!

Ubuntu usually comes with decent thermal management settings. Check if you've got `powerprofilesctrl` or `tlp` installed. You could also run `sensors-detect` to see if you've missed any fan controllers or temperature sensors for CPU throttling. Just a heads-up, it's better not to let it run hot for long since heat can damage components. Good luck!

Yeah, I heard running hot can lead to permanent damage. Make sure to keep an eye on it!
