Am I on the Right Track After Six Months of Learning Programming?

I've been learning programming for about five to six months. I've completed C and C++, and I'm nearly finished with data structures, but I still feel like I'm missing something. I often struggle to think through problems correctly, and even simple tasks sometimes slip my mind. I'm unsure whether I should enroll in another course or focus on practicing what I already know. I'm also considering applying for the Digital Egypt Pioneers scholarship to specialize in backend development. Is this a sensible path, and is it normal to feel this lost at this stage? I'd really appreciate advice from people with more experience.

You probably don’t need another course immediately. Spend more time writing code and completing small, practical projects. For a backend goal, you could build a simple to-do API with user accounts, or a book and library tracker with CRUD operations and a database. Projects like these will show you what you actually need to learn and give you practice connecting different concepts. A backend-focused scholarship can be a good next step if you’re ready to keep practicing alongside the lessons.

Six months can feel like a long time when you’re studying every day, but in programming it’s still very early. Feeling stuck or forgetting basic things is common. It usually means you understand some concepts but haven’t had enough practice applying them yet. Before adding more courses, try building small projects without following a tutorial, such as a terminal to-do list or a program that reads a file and counts words. The struggle is where much of the learning happens.

Implementing data structures yourself can help too. Try writing your own linked list, stack, or binary tree instead of only reading about them. They often become much clearer once you’ve had to make them work.
