I installed Bazzite first. How do I add Windows for dual boot?

Bazzite is already installed, and I’d like to add Windows without accidentally overwriting it. I have a second drive available. What’s the safest way to set this up, and how do I choose which system starts?

With a second drive, the straightforward option is to install Windows on that drive and leave the Bazzite drive alone. Back up anything you care about first. If you can, disconnect the Bazzite drive while installing Windows, so there’s less chance of selecting the wrong disk or having Windows use its EFI partition.

After the Windows installation, reconnect the Bazzite drive and use your motherboard’s startup boot menu to choose an operating system. You can also set the preferred drive in UEFI settings. This avoids needing to make one bootloader detect and manage both systems.

Windows is usually easier to install before Linux, but that does not mean you have to wipe Bazzite if you have a separate drive. The key is to identify the Windows target carefully. The installer can erase the selected drive, so double-check its size and contents before confirming. Disconnecting the Bazzite drive during installation is a useful extra safeguard if that’s practical.

Once both drives are connected, try the firmware boot menu first. If you want a single menu every time, check what boot options your Bazzite setup provides rather than assuming a particular bootloader will automatically find Windows.

So I can keep the current Bazzite install and just use the firmware menu to switch between drives?

Yes, that’s a simple way to start. Set the usual drive as the default, then use the firmware’s one-time boot menu when you want the other system.

If you only have one drive, pause before changing partitions. Make a full backup and confirm exactly how the disk is laid out, since resizing an existing Bazzite installation can be more involved than installing both systems from scratch. The lower-risk route for a fresh setup is generally Windows first, then Bazzite in the remaining space, but that means reinstalling Bazzite and restoring your data.

Either way, don’t let the Windows installer repartition or format anything unless you’re certain it’s the intended space. A virtual machine is another option if you only need Windows for tasks that don’t require direct hardware access.
