Apple Canceled My $500 Gift Cards and Won’t Refund or Replace Them—What Can I Do?

I bought two Apple gift cards totaling $500 in March after being targeted by a scam. I realized what was happening before giving the cards to anyone and contacted Apple immediately to ask about a refund. Apple instructed me to scratch off the card numbers and send photos, so I did. The cards were canceled, but I never received a refund or replacement.

About two months later, I followed up and was told Apple needed additional photos. I provided them and was told I would hear back within six weeks, but nobody contacted me. When I called again five months after the original purchase, a customer-relations representative told me for the first time that Apple required the original store receipt. I no longer have it, but I do have a bank statement and could potentially get statements from employees who saw me purchase the cards. Apple said neither would be sufficient.

The representative was dismissive, interrupted me, and refused to provide a supervisor or more identifying information. Apple currently has the canceled cards and the $500, leaving me unable to use either. What practical options do I have to recover the money or get replacement cards?

Ask Apple to return the full $500 in replacement gift cards if they won’t issue a cash refund. Keep every email, case number, photo, call date, and bank record. If Apple refuses, small-claims court may be an option, and you can include the time and costs caused by the prolonged delay if your local rules allow it.

I’m a lawyer, and filing a small-claims case is probably my next step. I mainly wanted to find out whether there was another way to escalate this first.

There probably isn’t a reliable social-media escalation route, and anyone claiming they can recover the cards privately should be treated as another scam risk. Contact Apple through its official support channels, request a written explanation of the documentation requirement, and ask for the case to be reviewed by the gift-card fraud or account-security team. Also ask the retailer whether they can reprint the receipt or provide a transaction record tied to the purchase.

I’m already being extremely cautious about suspicious calls and messages. My question is specifically how to get the company to honor or replace the canceled gift cards.

The cards may have been purchased legitimately even though the situation began with a scam attempt. Apple may still require proof of purchase before replacing cards, so a bank statement alone might not satisfy its policy. Ask the store for a duplicate receipt or detailed transaction lookup, and contact your bank to see whether a purchase dispute or documentation request is still available. If those efforts fail, consider a formal written demand before pursuing court.

Apple wasn’t the source of the scam, but it accepted the cards for investigation, canceled them, and kept the value. That’s why the request is for a refund or replacement rather than for Apple to investigate the original scam.
