Are Recent Updates Breaking Print-to-PDF in Browsers and Office Apps?

Has anyone else been dealing with a wave of tickets involving PDF generation? Users are reporting that saving a webpage as a PDF or using Print to PDF from Outlook, Word, Excel, or a browser either does nothing, briefly flashes the screen, produces a blank result, or fails depending on the destination. It initially looked like an Edge problem, but the issue may be related to a recent Windows or .NET update.

There also appears to be an issue with a newer Edge release. Some teams reported that rolling back to an earlier version restored Print to PDF, although that may not address the Office and WPF-related cases. A mixed-browser test is useful for separating browser problems from operating-system or framework problems.

This may be related to the August 2026 .NET Framework cumulative update. Microsoft documented failures in some WPF applications when generating PDF or XPS files that use certain fonts, including Calibri. The recommended fix is to install the September 2026 .NET Framework cumulative update or a later one. There is an AppContext switch listed as a temporary workaround, but it disables security protections, so it should only be used when absolutely necessary and temporarily.

That explains a lot—thanks! We’ll check the installed .NET updates before treating this as an Edge-only problem.

Our symptoms were specific to saving PDFs from Word and Excel to an SMB share. Saving the file locally or to OneDrive first, then copying it to the network share, worked around the issue. Another Outlook case was fixed by running an online Microsoft 365 repair.

We’ve seen the problem across several users, including printing to Adobe PDF. Chrome has worked as a temporary workaround for some people, so testing another browser can help narrow down whether the browser version is involved.
