Are web applications replacing desktop software in businesses?

In 2015, I developed a desktop application using Java Swing and JavaFX for my Computer Science degree. Recently, I've heard that desktop applications are largely being replaced by web applications built with JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue. As someone who has appreciated the type safety of Java, I find it a bit disappointing that the industry seems to prioritize JavaScript, particularly since users often prefer the convenience of web apps over installing software. I'm curious to know if web apps have truly become the standard in corporate environments for internal software, and if so, what specific advantages they offer compared to desktop applications beyond simply avoiding downloads. What are the main benefits of web apps over traditional desktop apps?

Absolutely, many corporations are leaning heavily towards web applications because they streamline the development process and cut costs. Users often experience app fatigue and prefer not having to download software, which leads to a smoother experience.

But it seems odd that mobile devices still demand standalone apps for everything! I've got apps for ordering food, checking in with schools, and even contacting government services.
