I'm researching a political organization that formally launched around 2015, but its domain appears to have been registered anonymously in 2002. Could the organization have somehow assigned the domain an earlier registration date, or does this indicate that someone registered the domain years before the organization launched? I'm also wondering whether the domain may have changed owners during that period.

No, domain registrations generally can’t be backdated. The creation date records when the domain was first registered, so a 2002 date means someone registered it in 2002. The organization could have bought it later, but that wouldn’t change the original date.

The domain may have been registered by an unrelated person who was speculating on the name, then held or parked until the organization acquired it. Ownership can change while the original registration date remains intact. A historical WHOIS service and the Internet Archive may show who used it before 2015.

An ownership change can happen through a normal transfer or a registrar-side account move, sometimes without an obvious change in the public record. Look for historical registrant data, nameservers, page captures, and evidence of a parked page. That can help distinguish early ownership by the organization from a later purchase.
