Can a Nearby or Available Wi-Fi Hotspot Make an iPhone Slower?

We recently moved and don't have home internet yet, so we're borrowing a portable Wi-Fi hotspot from the library. My daughter uses an iPhone 16e and believes the phone slows down when the hotspot is powered on because it can sense Wi-Fi nearby and is trying to connect to it. I suggested turning Wi-Fi off completely, but she says the slowdown still happens. She also says the phone works normally whenever the hotspot itself is turned off. Is there any truth to the idea that an iPhone would deliberately make cellular data slower just because a Wi-Fi signal is nearby, or is something else probably causing the problem?

Check whether the iPhone is automatically joining the hotspot or another saved network. If it connects to weak or overloaded Wi-Fi, the internet can feel slower than cellular even though the phone itself isn’t slowing down. Look for the Wi-Fi icon in the status area and disable Auto-Join for networks she doesn’t want to use.

It would help to clarify what “slower” means. If apps, webpages, and downloads are slow, the phone may be connected to a weak hotspot or the hotspot’s connection may be congested. If the entire interface feels sluggish, that’s more likely an app, storage, battery, heat, or software issue—not the presence of Wi-Fi. A phone doesn’t have a preference or intention to connect; it follows its network settings.

No, a phone doesn’t intentionally slow its cellular connection just because it detects a Wi-Fi signal. It only uses Wi-Fi if Wi-Fi is enabled and the phone actually connects to a network. If Wi-Fi is turned off, a nearby hotspot should have no effect on the phone’s performance.
