Can I transfer my Windows 10 retail license to a new Windows 11 PC?

I have a retail Windows 10 license linked to my Microsoft account, and I'm building a completely new PC with different hardware. Can I use that license to activate Windows 11 on the new system, or will I need to purchase another license?
Answers
A new motherboard can make Windows see the computer as a completely different device, so activation may fail at first even when the license is transferable. That doesnโt necessarily mean you need to buy another keyโsign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license and run the activation troubleshooter. Also make sure the old PC is no longer using the license, since a retail license generally covers only one active computer at a time.

Yesโif itโs genuinely a retail license linked to your Microsoft account, you can generally transfer it to the new PC. Install the same edition of Windows, sign in with that account, and use the Activation Troubleshooter if it doesnโt activate automatically. You may need to choose the option indicating that you recently changed hardware and select the old computer from the list.

MellowOrbit5: The key distinction is retail versus OEM. Licenses included with major-brand prebuilt computers are normally tied to that original machine and wonโt transfer, while a separately purchased retail license is intended to be moved to another computer. The old installation should no longer remain activated once the license is transferred.
