Could I Get in Trouble for Only Viewing the BIOS on a Work Computer?

I'm starting a new job in a few weeks and recently received the computer equipment I'll be using. I turned on the PC out of curiosity to check its specifications and opened the BIOS, but I didn't change any settings. I exited normally and shut the computer down. Could this violate company policy, and would the IT department be able to tell that I viewed the BIOS? I'll be working in healthcare, so I'm wondering whether there are stricter rules about company devices.

Since you donโ€™t have a login yet, checking the BIOS was an understandable way to see the hardware specs. Once you can sign in, Task Manager or the system information tools are safer and easier ways to check them. If you ever do change a setting by accident, tell IT exactly what happened so they can restore the expected configuration.

Youโ€™re probably fine, especially since you only looked and didnโ€™t change anything. Whether it technically violates policy depends on the companyโ€™s rules, but IT is unlikely to make an issue of a brief BIOS visit. In the future, itโ€™s best to avoid experimenting with company equipment unless you have permission.

Most likely, IT wonโ€™t know that you entered the BIOS. Some systems can record certain boot or configuration events, but simply viewing the menus usually doesnโ€™t create anything significant. Company machines may also have BIOS settings locked down, so donโ€™t change boot options, security settings, overclocking settings, or anything else youโ€™re unsure about.
