Did Asking About Data Governance Hurt My Chances in a Job Interview?

I recently interviewed for a mid-level modern workplace role at a financial services company. I handled the Intune and Entra ID questions confidently, and when the hiring manager invited me to ask questions, I asked about their SharePoint data-lifecycle policies, whether they used a document management system besides SharePoint, and how they handled legal holds. I have worked with legal-hold processes before, so I was trying to understand their environment and responsibilities. The hiring manager seemed unwilling or unable to answer those questions, and I was later told they chose another candidate who better matched the business needs. My background is mainly in healthcare rather than financial services. Did I ask inappropriate questions, or was the rejection more likely due to experience, fit, or another candidate simply being a closer match?

Technical correctness is only one part of an interview. They may have been comparing communication style, business awareness, industry experience, seniority, or how closely your background matched their immediate needs. A candidate can perform well and still lose to someone who was just a slightly better fit.

Those are reasonable questions, especially for a company handling regulated information. The fact that they did not answer may simply mean the interviewer was not the right person to discuss governance, or that the organization is still developing those processes. There is not enough information to conclude that the questions hurt you.

There are also plenty of explanations unrelated to your questions: an internal candidate, a preferred applicant, a small difference in experience, or an interview process that was largely a formality. Unless they provide specific feedback, trying to identify one mistake from the outcome will probably just create unnecessary stress.

Your healthcare experience could have been a factor if they wanted someone already familiar with financial-services regulations, audit expectations, or their specific compliance environment. That does not mean you did anything wrong; it may just mean another applicant required less ramp-up time.
