I have important information stored in locked Notes on my iPhone. My 18-year-old son helped me change the Notes password, but neither of us can remember the new one. I've tried various recovery suggestions, and I'm worried about losing information that I need for work. Is there any legitimate way to recover the password or regain access to the previously locked notes?

Unfortunately, Apple can’t access locked notes or recover a forgotten Notes password. Resetting the Notes password only lets you protect new notes; it does not unlock notes that were locked with the old password. Brute-forcing or extracting the password isn’t a realistic or supported recovery option. Ask your son to check whether he remembers it, and be wary of anyone offering paid ‘ethical hacking’ services—those are often scams.
The best immediate step is to ask your son whether he remembers the exact password or any variations he may have used. If the notes were synced or backed up elsewhere in an accessible form, check those locations, but restoring a backup generally won’t reveal a forgotten Notes password. Going forward, use a password manager and keep a secure recovery record so an important password isn’t dependent on someone else remembering it.
This is unfortunately a hard lesson: resetting the password won’t unlock existing notes, and there’s no legitimate bypass. If the information is needed for work, check whether it exists in email, cloud storage, device backups, printed records, or another app rather than trying to break into the locked notes.

So there isn’t a brute-force method that can recover the password? I was hoping there might be some way to get back into the notes.
