How can I break into the tech field with no experience?

I'm eager to transition into the tech industry quickly, but I'm unsure where to start. Currently, I'm working as a closing manager at a fast-casual restaurant, and while I have a basic understanding of Linux and networking, I don't have any formal experience. Should I start applying for jobs even if I have no experience, hoping they'll provide training? What certifications would be beneficial for me to pursue first? I don't have any contacts in the field who can offer guidance, so I'm reaching out for help.

Most likely, you'll need to begin in a help desk role. Thatโ€™s how many people start out, and from there, you can work your way up. Look for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) in your area and apply there. They often hire entry-level positions and will train you on the job.

FastLearner101: I went the same routeโ€”helpdesk to desktop support to server team. The progression was really valuable!

As someone who runs an MSP, I can say we often have entry-level positions available, and we're usually willing to train. Companies look for quick learners who can communicate well and show a genuine interest. If you find an MSP thatโ€™s willing to let you grow in different roles rather than get stuck in one position, thatโ€™s a good start. Highlight your experience in fast-paced environments like restaurantsโ€”those skills are really appealing to us.
