How can I capture, copy, and annotate screenshots on a Mac?

I'm new to using a Mac mini after many years with Windows. On Windows, the Snipping Tool lets me select part of the screen, immediately copy the capture to the clipboard, and annotate it with text, highlighting, or drawings. On my Mac, Shift-Command-4 saves the screenshot as a file, but I'd like a quicker way to copy it directly and edit it before pasting it into another app. What built-in Mac options or shortcuts can do this?

Hold Control along with the usual screenshot shortcut to copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it to the desktop. For example, use Control-Shift-Command-4 to capture a selected area directly to the clipboard, or Control-Shift-Command-3 for the entire screen.

Thanks, that’s very helpful.

After copying the screenshot, open Preview and choose File > New from Clipboard. You can then use Tools > Annotate to add text, highlights, or drawings, and export the result in the format you need.
