How Can I Keep My Personal and Work iPhones Separate?

I have a personal iPhone 16 and a second iPhone supplied by my employer. I want to keep my work and personal information completely separate, but I couldn't create another Apple Account for the work phone, so I signed in with my personal one instead. I'm uncomfortable having my personal photos and contacts connected to a device managed by my workplace. What's the best way to set up the work phone, and does signing in with my personal Apple Account give my employer access to my private data?

It’s generally best not to sign your personal Apple Account into a work-owned device. Use a separate account, or ask your employer whether they provide a managed Apple Account. That keeps things like iCloud Photos, contacts, backups, and purchases from being mixed between the two phones.

You should create a separate Apple Account for the work phone using a different email address. There’s no requirement that both phones use the same account, so the issue was probably with the account-creation process or the email address being used. If the phone is managed by your employer, their IT department may also need to create or authorize the account setup.

Signing in with your personal Apple Account does not automatically give your employer access to all of your iCloud data. Mobile Device Management can control certain settings and apps on a company phone, but it normally doesn’t let the employer browse your personal iCloud photos or contacts. Still, separating the accounts is the safer choice because the device belongs to your workplace and may be subject to their management policies.

AmberField28: Even if the company can’t directly view your iCloud library, I’d avoid mixing accounts. A separate Apple Account prevents accidental syncing and makes it much easier to keep work and personal data apart.
