I recently got in touch with someone who has an iPhone, but they don't use WhatsApp. We live in different countries, and I'm using an Android device. Does anyone know how I can message or call them without running into international fees?

You could try using WhatsApp or Signal, as those are pretty reliable. If they can't get WhatsApp, definitely suggest they set up Signal—it’s a solid alternative.
If WhatsApp isn't an option, consider using Microsoft Teams or any social media messenger. Those are free as long as both of you have internet access.
Honestly, there are tons of chat apps out there. Just find one that both of you are comfortable with and install it! It'll make things easier.
