My friend was working on a master's thesis using Google Drive, but when he opened the file today, all his work from 2025 was missing, leaving only the version from 2024. He mainly uses the Google Drive app on a Mac. Is there any way to recover the latest version? We've tried the typical recovery methods but haven't had any luck.

I can relate—thankfully I finished my thesis too! Contacting support could be a viable option if the version history doesn't help. Some users have reported that Google support has been able to assist with recovery, but of course, results may vary. If your friend has a good reason, like coursework, they might take it seriously.
I've been in a similar boat with losing work! One option might be to check the revision history in Google Drive. If your friend can access it, he might be able to restore an earlier version of the file that includes his lost work. Just go to the file, click on 'File', then 'Version history', and see if anything shows up. Fingers crossed for him!
It's really stressful to lose important files like that! Just a heads up, when you use Google Drive, your files are indeed stored on their servers. It’s super important to have a backup plan for critical documents. Do you know if your friend has any backup files anywhere? If he's only been working on that one file, it might be tricky, but I’ve heard of people contacting Google support to see if they can help recover lost files. Has he tried that?
