How can I recover my late father’s iPhone and Apple account data?

My father passed away unexpectedly, and our family is trying to recover important digital information from his phone and Apple account. We don't know his passcode. Apple explained that they cannot provide the phone password, but account data may be available through a legal process. We don't have much time or money for a lawyer. The phone appears to be an iPhone 17. What options do we have?

I really wish this were a hypothetical situation, but unfortunately it isn’t. Thanks to everyone who offered useful suggestions.

If your father owned a Mac or another Apple device that you can legally access, it may contain synced photos, messages, files, or other account information. Check those devices, external backups, and any written records for passwords or recovery details, but don’t expect Apple to reveal the phone’s passcode.

I’m sorry for your loss. You generally can’t bypass the iPhone passcode, but you may be able to request access to his Apple account as a deceased family member. If he used iCloud backups, that may provide the most useful information. Apple typically requires documentation such as a death certificate and may also require a court order.

The newer iPhones use strong hardware encryption, so accessing the data directly through the phone is not realistically possible without the passcode. Your best route is Apple’s deceased-account request process, which may allow access to eligible iCloud data after reviewing the required legal documents.

For the future, people should consider setting up a Legacy Contact and documenting their account-recovery wishes. It can make this process much easier for family members.
