How can I recover photos from an old Android phone that barely works?

I found my old General Mobile Discovery from middle school and haven't used it since 2019. It still charges, although very slowly and inconsistently, and I can keep the phone turned on. I want to save the photos and videos stored on it, but Wi-Fi and Bluetooth don't work. When I connect it to my computer with a USB cable, it only charges—the computer doesn't detect it, and the phone shows no USB notification. There isn't a Google account signed in either. I'm planning to take it to a professional, but I'd like to try safe troubleshooting steps first.

First, make sure the phone is unlocked when you plug it in. Older Android phones often default to charging only, so check Settings for USB or Connectivity options and choose File Transfer, MTP, or USB storage if available. USB debugging usually isn't required for normal file transfers, but it can sometimes help with older devices.

Try a known-good USB data cable rather than a charging-only cable. Many cables can provide power but have no data wires. Also test another USB port and, if possible, another computer. If the phone detects the connection, look for a notification or USB settings prompt and select file transfer.
