How can I restore Chrome and Edge after suspected malware and deleted files?

I've been using Google Chrome on my personal Windows account, but it used to show "Browser managed by your organization" even though I'm not connected to any organization. I later discovered and removed a suspicious extension. Microsoft Edge also redirected to Chrome and an unfamiliar search engine. Recently, Chrome began crashing whenever I opened it, and Windows reported that its shortcut had been deleted or changed. I removed the shortcut, and now I'm left with only Opera GX. I also deleted some application files, including DLLs, and although Chrome folders remain, both the normal installer and standalone installer fail with errors. How can I safely restore Chrome and Edge, and should I consider reinstalling Windows?

Deleting a shortcut normally doesnโ€™t uninstall a browser, but deleting DLLs or other program files can break it. Since you also saw redirects and the โ€œmanaged by your organizationโ€ message, treat this as a possible malware or unwanted-policy issue. First back up important personal files, then run reputable offline and full malware scans. After that, uninstall any damaged Chrome or Edge entries if Windows still lists them, remove leftover browser folders, restart, and download fresh installers from the official browser websites. Avoid random repair tools.

MellowPine47: I also deleted some of the application files, including DLLs. There are still Chrome folders, but both the regular installer and the standalone installer fail with errors.

At this point, a Windows repair or clean reinstall may be the quickest reliable fix, especially if malware changed browser policies or system files. Before doing that, copy documents, photos, browser data, and anything else important to an external drive or a trusted cloud backup. Donโ€™t assume everything is already synchronized to OneDriveโ€”verify that the files are actually present online. A reset can offer an option to keep personal files, but a clean installation is more thorough and removes installed programs, so make sure you have backups and installation keys first.
