How can I run an application entirely from a USB flash drive?

A friend once showed me how they could plug a flash drive into a school computer and run games directly from it without installing anything. I have limited storage on my computer and would like to do something similar with emulators and their games. What is the best way to set this up, and are there any limitations I should know about?

It depends on the application. Some programs need registry entries, drivers, or files placed in protected system folders, so simply copying an installed program may not work. Emulators are usually more forgiving, but a flash drive can be slower and less reliable for long-term storage. If possible, consider adding an internal drive or using an external hard drive or SSD. A hard drive should still be fast enough for most older-console emulation.

Look for portable versions of the emulators. These usually come as a standalone executable or a ZIP folder containing everything they need, so you can extract the folder directly onto the flash drive and run the program from there. Keep your ROMs in a separate folder on the drive. If an emulator requires an installation wizard, it may be better to find a portable alternative for that system.

Some games and applications are specifically offered in portable editions. Those are the easiest option because they don’t need to modify the host computer or write files into system folders.

SilverKite34: For emulators, a regular hard drive generally won’t be a major speed problem because the original systems and games didn’t require extremely fast storage access.
