I'm a college student and I'm worried that my roommate may be entering my room and moving or taking small personal items. I'd like to leave my laptop at home with its built-in camera on, then check the live view from my phone while I'm away. I don't need motion detection or necessarily want to save recordings—just a simple way to view the camera remotely. Is there a free website or app that can do this, or would I need extra hardware or a paid service?

A remote-access app could let you connect to the laptop from your phone and open its camera app when you want to check in. Make sure you use a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and configure the laptop so nobody nearby can access the session. This setup can be more complicated than using a dedicated indoor camera, though.
Free recording software can save the webcam footage locally, but that won’t let you watch live from your phone. For live viewing, a dedicated camera is usually simpler and more reliable than leaving a laptop running. If you use one, secure the account and check the school’s housing rules before recording a shared space.
You could use a video-call service or a streaming setup to keep the laptop camera active, but free services may have time limits, require an account, or expose the video to more systems than you expect. Test everything while you’re still at home, and avoid leaving private conversations or other sensitive material visible.
Before setting this up, consider whether a camera is allowed in your room and make sure it only shows your private space, not your roommate or shared areas. It may also be worth documenting what you think is missing and talking with housing staff or another trusted person, since remote viewing alone won’t prevent someone from entering.

I can leave the laptop running, but I mainly want to check the live view from my phone occasionally rather than save recordings.
