How can I securely view my laptop’s webcam from my phone while I’m away?

I'm a college student and I'm worried my roommate may be entering my room and taking small items. I'd like to leave my laptop running with its built-in webcam pointed at my belongings, then check the live camera feed from my phone while I'm away. I'm not very experienced with computers, so I'm looking for a simple option that doesn't require buying extra hardware or paying for a complicated service. I'd also like to avoid saving video unless necessary.

A small indoor security camera would be the simplest and most reliable solution because it is designed for phone viewing and motion alerts. However, if you use one, secure the account immediately with a unique password and two-factor authentication. Also consider documenting anything missing and speaking with your roommate or housing office, since a camera may not resolve the underlying issue by itself.

Free recording software can use the built-in webcam and save footage locally, but it generally won’t let you conveniently view the live feed from your phone by itself. For phone access, you’d need either a properly secured remote-access tool or a camera service. Avoid random webcam-streaming websites, since they could expose your video or account credentials.

That makes sense. I mainly wanted occasional live checks, so I’ll look for a reputable remote-access option rather than leaving a public stream running.

Motion-detection software would probably be more useful than watching a live feed constantly. It can record only when something moves, which saves storage and gives you timestamps to review. Before setting it up, check your school or housing rules and make sure the camera only captures your private room rather than shared areas or other people without their knowledge.

A remote-access app can work, since you could connect from your phone and open the laptop’s camera app when you want to check in. Make sure you use a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication if available, and configure the laptop so it doesn’t make sounds or display notifications while you’re connected. This is more setup than a dedicated camera, but it doesn’t require extra hardware.
