How can I update Windows without getting locked out by BitLocker?

Whenever I install a Windows update, my laptop sometimes starts asking for a BitLocker recovery key and I can't get back into Windows. This first happened last year, and a friend eventually restored the laptop to its state before the update. Since then, I've repeatedly paused updates for several weeks, but Windows is now too far behind to pause them any longer. I'm worried that installing the pending update will trigger the lockout again. I'm not very technical, and I have important project files on the laptop, so I'd like to know how to prepare safely, avoid another recovery screen if possible, and protect my files without resetting the entire computer.

BitLocker usually appears after Windows detects a change involving the TPM, BIOS, boot configuration, or firmware. Before updating, open the BitLocker or device-encryption settings and use the option to suspend protection temporarily, rather than permanently decrypting the drive. Install the Windows update, restart fully, and then resume protection. Also check the laptop manufacturerโ€™s support page for BIOS and firmware updates, since an outdated firmware component can cause repeated recovery prompts.

Northstar_Jules3: If the recovery prompt keeps happening even after suspending protection, stop retrying updates and have a repair shop or the manufacturer check the TPM and BIOS settings. Repeatedly changing boot or security settings can make the problem harder to diagnose.

Before doing anything, confirm that you can actually access the files while Windows is running and create a recovery USB if possible. You can also write down the exact wording of the recovery screen and take photos of any error codes. A previous restore may have hidden the real cause, so having the recovery key and a backup is much safer than relying on rolling back the update. Do not choose options that erase the drive unless you have a verified backup and professional guidance.

Donโ€™t start by turning BitLocker off or resetting the laptop. First, back up your important projects to an external drive or another trusted location. Then find and save the BitLocker recovery key before updating; it may be stored in your Microsoft account under the device recovery-key section, or with whoever originally set up the laptop. If the update triggers recovery again, that key should unlock the existing installation without deleting anything.

MellowPine47: I didnโ€™t realize the recovery key could be saved ahead of time. Iโ€™ll make sure my files are backed up and check whether my Microsoft account has one before installing anything.
