During a WhatsApp video call, my brother's Android phone received an SMS/MMS containing a sentence my dad was saying aloud at that exact moment. My dad was using an iPhone, did not type or intentionally send a message, and his Messages app showed no outgoing text. They checked both phones immediately, and the message definitely arrived as a regular SMS/MMS rather than through WhatsApp. What made this especially confusing was that the wording matched what my dad was saying during the call. The issue was eventually traced to Siri on my dad's Apple Watch, which had apparently been triggered and sent the message.

The most likely explanation is an accidentally triggered voice assistant. Siri can send a text from an Apple Watch or another connected Apple device even when the message does not appear in the expected place on the iPhone right away. If the watch heard part of the conversation as a command, it could have dictated and sent the sentence through SMS.
That fits the timing much better than WhatsApp or a carrier issue. A connected Apple Watch can handle messages independently, so checking only the iPhone would miss what actually sent it.
