How Did TeamViewer Mysteriously Install on My Computer?

I woke up this morning to find a TeamViewer icon on my desktop out of nowhere. I keep my computer organized, so this was a total surprise! Not only that, but it was running in the background too. I quickly uninstalled it, but now I'm worried—should I go as far as reinstalling Windows? Is this something like a RAT virus? How could this have happened?

It’s pretty unlikely that TeamViewer would install itself on its own. Could it be that you accidentally installed it along with some other software? Some programs have sneaky options you might miss. I’d recommend doing a clean install of Windows just to be safe, but that’s definitely up to you.

If you didn’t give anyone remote access to your PC, then it's either malware or a sneaky program that you’ve installed recently. But if you don’t remember installing anything, it’s always better to be safe and consider reinstalling Windows.

Before you jump to reinstall Windows, check the Event Viewer. That might give you a log entry showing when and how TeamViewer was installed. If it was part of another program you installed, it could help you track it down.

Software doesn't just pop up out of nowhere. It’s possible that you were tricked into installing it, or maybe some malware on your device did it. Running a full antivirus scan would be a good start. If you want to be safe, wiping your drives and reinstalling Windows is a solid plan.
