How do you tell MDR vendors apart when the demos all sound the same?

We’re evaluating MDR for a UAE fintech with around 180 endpoints and no in-house SOC. Data residency and incident response SLAs matter, but the vendor demos have started to blur together. What helped you compare providers beyond the sales presentation?

Write down the requirements that are genuinely non-negotiable before choosing: where customer and telemetry data is stored, who can access it, response and notification timelines, and what happens during an incident. Ask each vendor to answer the same questions in writing, then compare only providers that meet those requirements. After that, price and convenience can break a tie.

References from organizations with similar regulatory obligations are probably more useful than another polished demo. Ask how incidents were escalated in practice, whether the provider communicated clearly under pressure, and whether the service matched what was promised. Also ask what the vendor did not handle, so you can spot gaps that might otherwise fall back on your team.

That’s a good point. We’ve asked broad satisfaction questions so far, not what the provider actually did during an escalation.

Make the proof of concept test your workflow, not just the product. Agree on a few realistic detection and escalation scenarios, then see what information the analysts request, how quickly the right people are contacted, and how clear the recommended actions are. A dashboard can look great while the handoff to your team is vague.

Keep the comparison practical. Decide which endpoint platform and integrations you need, define the service coverage and response expectations, and get every vendor to confirm those points. If several options satisfy the same requirements, there may not be a dramatic technical difference, so cost and contract terms are reasonable deciding factors.

Ask to meet the people who would actually handle your alerts, not only the sales and product teams. Get specific about analyst coverage, escalation contacts, what counts as an emergency, and how the provider supports investigations. The quality of that operating relationship can matter more than another list of features.
