While viewing photos for a restaurant on my phone, I was suddenly redirected to a fake "I'm not a robot" verification page. The same page appeared during several searches, so I eventually clicked the verification prompt and a file downloaded. I deleted it immediately and did not open or install it. Since then, I disconnected the phone from the internet, cleared my browser history, cookies, and saved passwords, ran scans on my Google Pixel and with TotalAV, checked for unfamiliar apps, enabled Advanced Protection, and restarted the phone. Is there anything else I should do, or is the phone likely safe?

The downloaded item appears to be a file that Android cannot normally execute as a native app, which further reduces the risk. Delete it from the Downloads folder and empty the browser’s deleted-items area if it has one. In the future, close these verification pages instead of interacting with them—real CAPTCHA prompts generally don’t require downloading a file.
If you only downloaded the file, deleted it, and never opened or installed it, you’re probably fine. Android’s Play Protect would generally warn about or block a suspicious APK during installation. The important thing is not to run unknown files or grant them permissions.
Those fake verification pages are commonly used to trick people into downloading malware or copying commands into a terminal or search box. Simply seeing the page or downloading a file usually isn’t enough to infect the phone; the risk comes from opening, installing, or executing what it provides. Keep the file deleted, leave Play Protect enabled, and update Android and your browser.
A full power-off and restart is reasonable, but it isn’t a substitute for avoiding the file. Since you checked your apps, ran scans, enabled stronger protection, and didn’t install anything, a factory reset is likely unnecessary. Monitor the phone for unusual pop-ups, new apps, battery drain, or unexpected account activity, and change passwords only if you entered them on the suspicious page.

That’s what happened—I deleted it immediately and never opened or installed it.
