My iPhone 13 has suddenly started closing apps as soon as I open them. This has been happening for about four hours. Apps that were already open before the problem began still work, but I can't launch anything new, including Settings. I'm worried because the phone isn't backed up. I've had it for around three years, haven't updated iOS in about two years, and have more than 100,000 photos stored on it. The battery has also been draining unusually fast lately. Could low storage, the outdated software, or another issue be causing this, and what can I safely try without losing my data?

Not updating for two years could definitely be part of the problem, especially along with the recent battery drain. If a force restart gets the phone working again, back up your photos and update iOS as soon as possible. Avoid deleting apps or resetting the phone until your data is backed up.
First, check whether the phone is almost out of storage if you can get into Settings. Low storage can make apps crash. After that, try restarting the phone. Since Settings closes immediately, you may need to use a force restart instead.

I can’t check the storage because Settings closes as soon as I open it. I’m worried about restarting because the apps that are currently open are the only ones still working.
