Is Linux a Good Fit for a Parent Who Uses Office and Printers?

My parent is interested in moving away from Windows because of slow performance and concerns about malware. He mainly uses Microsoft Office for basic tasks, so I'm considering installing Ubuntu and using the Office web apps. I'd back up his Windows installation first and possibly use a separate partition so he can try Linux without fully committing. He relies heavily on Wi‑Fi, and the laptop uses Intel hardware, although I don't know the exact model. He also has both an HP printer and a Brother printer. Are there any compatibility issues or other things I should test or plan for before making the switch?

HP and Brother printers often work well on Linux, but printer scanning can require extra setup. Look up both model numbers and confirm that printing and scanning work before committing. Installing Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu may also provide a more familiar, low-maintenance desktop for someone coming from Windows.

Make a full backup and recovery USB first, and explain the new interface before handing the computer over. A dual-boot setup can be useful for testing, but it adds maintenance and can be confusing. Another option is to let him try Linux from a USB drive or on a spare machine, then install it once the important tasks and hardware have been verified.

Wi‑Fi is usually fine with Intel hardware, but check the exact laptop model and test it from a live USB session before installing. That will also let you check sound, graphics, sleep, Bluetooth, and the touchpad without changing the existing system.

The Office web apps may be enough for basic documents and spreadsheets, but test the exact files and features he uses before switching.
