Is Linux Mint a Good Choice for Kids Playing Minecraft?

I just switched my laptop over to Linux Mint after getting a new computer for my kids, and I'm a bit of a beginner with Linux. However, the constant permission requests on their user profile are driving us all crazy! They're mostly using Steam to play Minecraft on our family server, searching for tutorials on Brave, and downloading mods. While I'm not thrilled about the mod downloads, my older teens think it's fine. I'm worried about viruses and considering if switching their computer to Linux is a good idea. Would it be better to upgrade their Microsoft account to adult status to avoid family setting issues? If Linux is the way to go, which version would be the simplest for a clueless parent like me?

Honestly, a lot of viruses target Windows systems. With Linux, especially Linux Mint, the risk of getting a virus is way lower, so it should make you feel safer letting your kids play there.

From what you've described, Mint should run Minecraft just fine. Just a heads up: if they play multiplayer games that use anti-cheat software, they might run into issues on Linux. I've played Minecraft on Mint 22.2 without any trouble. Plus, most viruses hit Windows, so it should be a safer environment! And yes, Brave should definitely work on Linux, although Mint may come with Firefox by default.

Consider using ClamAV as a virus scanner on Linux to add an extra layer of safety for your kids! It can help identify any potential threats, although Linux is a lot less prone to malware in general.

PrismLauncher is an awesome tool for managing Minecraft and its mods without the hassle of dealing with random downloads. It has a built-in mod browser that makes it simple to find and install what you need safely, even on Linux. If you have existing Minecraft installs, it should be straightforward to connect it to your current files.
