Is My iPhone 12 Pro Max Safe After a Third-Party Screen Repair?

My iPhone 12 Pro Max was knocked out of my hand at a festival, and the screen went completely black. Since I recently moved to college and needed a quick repair, I took it to a nearby shop instead of Apple. They replaced the screen within about an hour for $75. Since then, I've noticed a pink tint when viewing the phone from an angle, thicker-looking screen borders, and slower charging. Settings also shows a "Display Not Recognized" message. I initially checked for a swollen battery and didn't notice anything, but later became worried that the screen might be bulging near the top. The phone wasn't unusually warm, but I turned it off and disconnected it from power. Is this likely just an aftermarket display warning, or could the phone be unsafe?

The message usually means the replacement display isnโt being recognized as a genuine, properly paired Apple part. Third-party screens can sometimes look or behave differently, including having a different color cast, thicker edges, reduced brightness, or other display issues. That warning by itself doesnโt mean the phone is about to catch fire.

iPhones have part-authentication and repair-history checks, so replacing a component outside Apple or an authorized repair network can cause an โunknownโ or โnot recognizedโ message. It may also mean some features donโt work exactly as they did with the original display. The screen quality and installation still matter, though, so the phone should be inspected if the borders look uneven or anything is lifting.

A third-party replacement can explain the display warning, but a possible bulge is a separate safety concern. Donโt press the screen back down, keep the phone away from heat and flammable materials, and donโt charge it if the display is lifting, the battery is swelling, thereโs a chemical smell, or the phone becomes unusually hot. Since you suspect the screen is bulging, having Apple or a reputable repair provider inspect it promptly is the right move. Your iPhone 12 Pro Max doesnโt have AppleCare+, so the original shopโs repair warranty and the quality of the replacement part are worth checking as well.

MellowPine47: Thatโs reassuring. It wasnโt unusually warm, but Iโm still keeping a close eye on it because Iโm not very familiar with phone repairs.
