Is the RX 6600 worth paying more for than an RX 480?

I’m choosing between an RX 6600 8GB for $220 and a cheaper RX 480 8GB for a budget 1080p gaming build. Is the newer card worth the extra cost, especially for newer games?

For 1080p, I’d pick the RX 6600 if the $220 price fits your budget. It’s substantially newer and generally much faster, while the RX 480’s age can mean weaker performance and more uncertainty about compatibility with newer games.

That makes future compatibility sound like a real concern. Thanks.

The price on the RX 480 matters a lot here. Both have 8GB, so VRAM capacity alone doesn’t make the older card a better deal. If it’s only a little cheaper, I’d skip it. It’s an old card, and used hardware also comes with more uncertainty about wear and remaining lifespan.

Check whether the RX 6600 is new or used, and compare local prices before deciding. $220 might be reasonable in one region and steep in another. If it’s used, compare it with other cards available near you rather than assuming it’s automatically a bargain.

If you mainly play older games, a very cheap RX 480 could still be enough. But for newer releases, some games may not launch on it, and it’s not a great bet if you want the build to stay useful. I’d only consider it if the price is low enough that you’re comfortable with those limits.
