I have a PC mainly used for simulation work with a Ryzen 9 3950X and 32GB of 3600MHz CL16 memory. Since my gaming laptop recently died, I want to use this system for gaming too, but the processor looks dated in gaming benchmarks. I'm considering building a new system with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with both setups using the same RTX 5060 Ti. I plan to play competitive games at 1440p and would like to stay above 144 FPS. Should I replace the platform, or keep the current PC and only upgrade the graphics card?

The 7800X3D can provide a noticeable improvement in CPU-limited competitive games, especially if you’re aiming for very high and consistent frame rates. However, a 5060 Ti may struggle to maintain 144 FPS at 1440p unless you lower settings, depending on the game. For MOBAs and lighter esports titles, the older CPU may already be enough.
If you do move to the 7800X3D, budget for new memory as well. A 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit is the usual pairing. Since your simulation machine is already occupied with heavy workloads, the productivity drawback of the 7800X3D may not matter for your gaming system.
Whether it’s worth it mostly depends on how much you value the extra frame rate and frame-time consistency. At 1440p, the graphics card will often be the limiting factor, so I’d upgrade the GPU first and only replace the platform if testing shows the 3950X holding back your target FPS.
I’d start by keeping the current system and upgrading the graphics card. If your 3950X already delivers over 144 FPS in the games you play, replacing the CPU and motherboard won’t make much practical difference. Check your actual GPU and CPU usage before spending on a new platform.
A cheaper same-platform option would be a 5950X. It can improve gaming somewhat while also helping simulation workloads, and you wouldn’t need a new motherboard or DDR5 memory. The 7800X3D is much better for gaming, but it has considerably weaker productivity performance than your 3950X.
