Shampoo Got Into My Phone After I Dropped It in the Shower—What Should I Do?

I accidentally dropped my phone in the shower, and some shampoo seems to have gotten inside. I noticed a bubble around the charging port, and although I wiped the phone off, the speakers now sound static. I can also see what looks like shampoo coming out of the speaker openings. I'm worried there may be residue in the charging port or other internal damage. What steps should I take, and is this something that needs professional repair?

The missing phone model matters because water-resistance ratings and cleaning instructions vary. Still, the safest immediate steps are the same: power it down, disconnect accessories, don’t insert anything into the charging port, and give it plenty of time to dry. A temporary muffled or crackly speaker can happen when liquid is trapped in the speaker grille, but shampoo residue can cause longer-term problems, so persistent symptoms or charging warnings are good reasons to seek repair.

Turn the phone off and don’t plug it in or try to charge it while there could still be liquid in the port. Remove the case, gently wipe the outside, and let it dry in a well-ventilated place with the port facing downward. Don’t use a hair dryer or put it in rice. Since shampoo can leave residue, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your specific model; if it’s water-resistant, a careful rinse with clean fresh water may be appropriate, but don’t do that if the phone has damage or its seals may be compromised. If the static or visible liquid continues after it has fully dried, have it inspected by a repair technician.

Water resistance doesn’t guarantee protection from soapy water, especially if the phone is older or has been dropped before. Avoid charging until the port is completely dry, and get it checked if the audio remains distorted.
