The RTX 5070 12GB and RX 9070 XT 16GB are currently available for roughly the same price near me, although both are heavily inflated at around $900. I'm building a PC mainly for 1440p gaming, but I'll also use it for programming and occasional content creation. I'd like to keep the system for the next four or five years without upgrading. I'm not especially interested in running LLMs, and I don't believe my GIS work requires CUDA. Which graphics card would be the better choice?

At the same price, the RX 9070 XT is the clear gaming choice. It’s generally a tier above the RTX 5070 and is closer to the RTX 5070 Ti in performance. The 16GB of VRAM should also be useful for 1440p gaming and keeping the card for several years. The main tradeoff is that Nvidia may offer somewhat better upscaling and image quality in certain situations.
For mostly gaming and general use, I’d choose the 9070 XT without much hesitation. AMD’s current cards are a reasonable choice, and there’s no general reason to avoid the brand. Just verify your particular creative software supports the features you need. The $900 price is painful for either card, but if the complete 9070 XT build is only about 20% more than one using a 9060 XT, the upgrade is easier to justify.
The only major reason to pick the RTX 5070 here is if your specific software depends on CUDA or Nvidia-only features. Programming and content creation can mean very different things, so check the exact applications and plugins you plan to use. If they work well with AMD and gaming is the priority, the 9070 XT offers substantially better performance for the same money.
