Should I Follow Tutorials or Build Projects While Learning C and C++?

I'm a beginner learning programming with C and C++. So far, I've covered the basics, arrays, pointers, and object-oriented programming, although I'm still studying those topics. I'm unsure whether I should focus on tutorials and structured lessons first, then start building projects, or begin making small projects now and learn new concepts as they become necessary. I'd appreciate practical advice on an effective way to learn and gradually progress toward larger programs.

A good approach is to alternate between tutorials and projects. Use lessons to introduce a concept, then apply it immediately in a small program. Projects will expose the gaps in your understanding, while tutorials and documentation can help you fill them. Keeping the scope manageable is important so the project stays useful rather than overwhelming.

Choose one language to focus on at a time instead of trying to learn C and C++ simultaneously. C can be a useful starting point for understanding memory, pointers, and low-level programming, but whichever language you choose, use reliable books or documentation alongside consistent practice. Object-oriented programming can wait until you have a stronger foundation in the language basics.

Start building projects, ideally something you genuinely want to use. A real goal gives you a reason to learn each concept, and youโll retain more by solving problems than by watching lessons passively. Begin with something small and let it grow graduallyโeven an unfinished project can teach you a lot.
